Leonardo/ISAST Organizational Collaborations

Leonardo/ISAST has collaborated with a number of art, science and technology institutions and organizations over the past 20 years. Collaborations have resulted in publishing projects on a variety of topics (see our Special Projects page and our Calls for Papers page for current examples), events, workshops, symposia, conferences, salons, lectures.

Organizations wishing to collaborate with Leonardo/ISAST are encouraged to send proposals to Jeff Babcock (jeffnb@sfsu.edu) Board Chair. Proposals should include information about the host organization and outline the nature of the collaboration, providing pertinent details such as proposed schedule of events.

"Virtual Africa" was created to develop exchanges between intellectuals and artists from Africa and from the other continents. Designed as a large patchwork of images and texts, it focuses on several themes including the relations between arts and sciences and the relations between ancient and contemporary arts as well as historic and contemporary relations between Africa and the other continents. Zekri and Chevaucher's River Festival is an artistic dialogue created while traveling the great rivers of Africa. A seminar on "The Spirit and Power of Water" was held in Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, in May 2001. Artists, scientists, and engineers presented their research on how water and water networks structure the cultural, economic and political lives of African peoples and human beings in general. A selection of artworks and articles from the symposium have been published in Leonardo journal.

Leonardo collaborated with Harvestworks on "The Interactive Project: Activated Environments and Hybrid Instruments," which was held April 23-25, 2004 at various locations throughout New York City. The weekend-long seminar featured artworks by Harvestworks residents, panel discussions and demonstrations and involved arts organizations and artist's studios in the city.

IDEA (the International Directory of Electronic Arts) first appeared in 1990, in a paper edition, published by CHAOS. It was compiled with the assistance of Leonardo Editorial Board members. The online edition started in 1996 with the technical collaboration of the French company Altern B. The Planetary Collegium was first presented by Roy Ascott in a paper given at the 5th International Symposium on Electronic Art in Helsinki. Since then Leonardo has sought to extend the discussion that it engendered by publishing papers which address in some depth the issues raised. The Planetary Collegium is a world-wide network, a series of relationships and a set of complex systems, rather than any kind of fixed institution or establishment of bricks and mortar. The SolArt Global Network is an international group of artists using solar energy in their artwork. These artists seek to stimulate the global cultural imagination toward use of renewable energy resources. SolArt Global Network, Coordinated by Nora and Jurgen Claus at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany is a network of artists, engineers, scientists and scholars participating in an international activity. SolArt Global Network brings participants together with the public at large around specific works created outdoors with solar media. Under the UNESCO Digi-Arts Knowledge Portal for technology-based arts and music, an international colloquium took place on 4-5 December, 2003 at the Sarai Center for Study of Developing Societies in Delhi, India. The meeting, entitled "Old pathways/New travelers: new media, electronic music and digital art practices in the Asia Pacific region", sought to launch a media arts and electronic music initiative sponsored by UNESCO Digi-Arts and Sarai, to promote and develop research, networking, mutual cooperation, training and knowledge in these fields within the region. The meeting also aimed to point out the role and place of media and technology in a social, cultural and economic landscape inscribed by ancient histories of contact and paths that internally connect the landmass of Asia and the island cultures of the Pacific regions, its impact on young people and its potential as a unique tool to promote cultural diversity. The editors of the Leonardo Electronic Almanac have invited contributions to be published in LEA from artists, musicians, practitioners, curators and critics that address regional networking competence problems and realities in the field of digital arts and electronic music in the Asia Pacific cultures.
